You filed (or extended). The deadline passed. The immediate pressure is off. But the smartest thing you can do right now is spend 30 minutes setting up next year's success while everything is fresh.
1. Save a copy of your return. Download your completed return as a PDF. Store it somewhere you'll find it next year — a dedicated "Taxes" folder in your cloud storage works perfectly.
2. Note what surprised you. Did you owe more than expected? Miss a deduction? Get confused by a form? Write down 2-3 things you'd do differently. Future you will thank present you.
3. Adjust your withholding if needed. If you owed a lot or got a huge refund, your W-4 might need updating. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to dial it in.
4. Set up a simple document system. Create a folder (physical or digital) for this year's tax documents as they arrive throughout the year. When a 1099 or receipt comes in, drop it in immediately.
5. Mark Q1 estimated payment date. If you have self-employment or investment income, your first estimated payment for next year is due in June. Put it on your calendar now.
If you only have 10 minutes: save your return, write one lesson learned, and create a folder for next year's documents. That's it. You're already ahead of 90% of people.
