Big headline does not equal simple rule.
This tax season has a lot of people repeating headlines they do not actually understand.
You've probably heard phrases like no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and new deductions for seniors and assumed the rules must be simple. They are not. The IRS has published multiple 2026 resources explaining that these benefits come with eligibility rules, income phaseouts, filing requirements, and a new Schedule 1-A that many taxpayers have never used before.
Here's the part that matters most: the goal is not to memorize every headline. The goal is to know which changes apply to you, which ones do not, and what you need to gather before filing.
The IRS also says these new or enhanced deductions are available to both taxpayers who itemize and taxpayers who take the standard deduction, though each deduction has its own eligibility rules and income limits.
So the safest tax move this season is simple: slow down, stop filing off a headline, and review what actually applies to your return.
